| What is a charter school? Mater Gardens Academy is classified as a Charter School in the Miami-Dade Public System School. Our school, like other charter schools, is a public school that operates under a performance contract, or a "charter," that frees us from most rules and regulations created for traditional public schools. As part of the contract, our charter school is held strictly accountable for academic and financial results. What are the advantages of placing a student in a charter school? * Student learning improves. * Learning opportunities for ALL STUDENTS are increased. * Different and innovative learning methods are implemented by instructional staff. Our charter school program Mater Gardens Academy Charter School is a non-profit, self-managed public school. Although we must be approved and monitored by the local school board, we run independently -- like private schools, except that you do not have to pay tuition! As a result of our independence, our approach to teaching is a little different from that of traditional public schools. Mater Gardens Academy's curriculum is based on the Florida Sunshine State Standards/Curriculum Based Competencies and encompasses the core subject areas of math, reading/language arts, science and social studies. However, the material is presented in a multi-age setting which fosters a challenging environment thus creating the opportunity to increase learning gains. Students are exposed to material and concepts they may not otherwise until further along in their educational career. We also offer weekly special area classes for Spanish, , art, music and physical education, as well as French, dance, computers and other electives for our middle school students. Just as each student learns differently, each teacher has his or her unique style of teaching. Therefore, our curriculum includes elements of whole language and phonics instruction, as well as whole group, small group and cooperative group activities. Our teachers and administrators work daily to develop the curriculum, as all the members of the Mater Gardens team are integral facilitators of knowledge. Student Pride The focus at Mater Gardens is not only to develop life long learners but to create well-rounded individuals. We are able to meet and surpass this goal by offering school clubs such as student government, cheerleading, dance line, art, girls and boys basketball, baseball, chess club, journalism club, reading clubs and so on. We believe that providing a variety of social experiences, in addition to our challenging curriculum, is of great benefit and importance to our student body. The Faculty The faculty of Mater Gardens consists of Highly Qualified Florida Certified teachers with an average of over 10 years teaching experience. All teachers are constantly involved in activities that foster professional development and model life long learning. In addition, the staff at Mater Gardens includes teacher assistants in the primary graders, which assist in lowering the student to teacher ratio to an average of 13 to 1. |
